The Pears’ relentless rise through the standings continued Wednesday when they overtook the slowly fading Kangaroos. This wasn’t necessary. We are not playing a strict zero-sum game. The Pears could have risen without a corresponding Kangaroo decline.
Consider the Rosebuds. Yesterday they rose, bud, into a tie for second place (by GB) with a team tied for first place (winning percentage). So if PR=OD and OD=HD, then PR=HD, right? That’s the transitive principle or something. I remember doing proofs back about 45 years ago involving this principle. Anyway, the Rosebuds rose elegantly without making anyone else descend.
Or consider the Tornadoes, who have been content to spin in place at or just above .500. Tornadoes cannot deny their essential nature as spinning vortices of wind. They apparently have realized how destructive uncontrolled windiness is, and have charitably decided to limit the damage they do by not traveling across the landscape of our standings. Such kindliness in a Tornado, with such ruthlessness in a Pear. Someone should paint that still life (of a tornado?) to capture the inspiring twisted twister.

Haviland: W, 0.5 – 0.5.
Old Detroit: DNP, 1 – 0.
Portland: W, 10 – 4.
Pittsburgh: “W”, 0 – 6. This has to be the most egregious phony win of all time.
Peshastin: W, 13 – 3.
Canberra: W, 7 – 5.
Flint Hill: DNP, 1 – 0.
Cottage: W, 8 – 7.
Kaline: W, 8 – 5.
D.C.: W, 5 – 5. See? If we cooperate, everyone either wins, or “wins”, or doesn’t play. It’s all positive sum . Just don’t let the Commissioner catch us all winning, or he’ll want to change the rules to make the game harder (or “more realistic” as he so quaintly puts it).

“ruthless”? I wonder. How ruthless can you be while in 5th place? Besides, what is this “ruth” stuff? Has anyone ever been ruthful? The Pears have lots of ruth, whatever it is.
