I am posting this Thursday update way too late — it’ll be about 10 pm on Thursday — for two purposes:
- ) to establish a baseline for tomorrow’s hopefully timely update, the last one before we draft Saturday, and
- ) to allow the Rosebuds another day to revel in being in first. Although, having already seen most of the results of Thursday’s games, I think the ‘Buds will get at least one more day in first.
You will see that this update was quick — it’s sparely written and presented. It has also been slow, at least 12 hours later than it should have been. Another example of the difference between speed and quickness.
EFL Standings for 2016

TEAM | WINS | LOSSES | PCT. | GB | RS | RA |
Portland Rosebuds | 65 | 36 | .639 | — | 529.9 | 392.5 |
Old Detroit Wolverines | 64 | 36 | .640 | 0.1 | 541.3 | 406.2 |
Haviland Dragons | 64 | 38 | .624 | 1.4 | 495.3 | 387.0 |
Pittsburgh Alleghenys | 58 | 40 | .592 | 5.1 | 520.5 | 434.5 |
Peshastin Pears | 55 | 46 | .541 | 9.9 | 477.9 | 433.7 |
Canberra Kangaroos | 54 | 47 | .534 | 10.6 | 471.5 | 435.3 |
Flint Hill Tornadoes | 50 | 50 | .500 | 14.1 | 428.4 | 427.7 |
Cottage Cheese | 49 | 51 | .486 | 15.4 | 486.6 | 495.6 |
Kaline Drive | 44 | 58 | .429 | 21.3 | 496.3 | 576.6 |
D.C. Balk | 33 | 68 | .329 | 31.3 | 397.8 | 573.9 |
NOTE: I am giving you stats and results since Tuesday, since I messed up the Wednesday standings somehow, and perhaps the stats.
Portland: W 2, L 0; 12 – 4. (.253, .324, .453; 31.3 ip, 8 er)
Old Detroit: W 2, L 0; 13 – 7 (.295, .361 .455; 27 ip, 8 er)
Haviland: W 1, L 1; 7 – 10. (.232, .290, .304; 30 ip, 13 er).
On Tuesday morning, the W’s were 0.1 games ahead of both the Rosebuds and the Dragons. Since then the Rosebuds have very slightly outplayed the W’s , while the Dragons have stumbled. The chink in the Dragons’ armor was Matt Bush, who Royal Chulked with 4 earned runs in 0.3 innings.
Pittsburgh: “W” 1, L 0; (-2) – 0. (.227, .292, .273; 13.3 ip, 0 er).
This is a strange result. On one hand the Alleghenys won their game and improved their winning percentage by 0.001. On the other hand, they have now scored 1.8 fewer runs than they had on Tuesday, while allowing 0.1 fewer, so they were outscored, and they lost 0.7 games in the standings. The slightly better winning percentage with the slightly worse RS/RA is hard to explain.
Peshastin: W 1, L 1; 18 – 17. (.308, .368, .628; 9 ip, 8 er).
Canberra: W 1, L 1; 4 – 6. (.200 ,. 265, .267; 18 ip, 5 er).
These two teams took different paths but came out with about the same result, keeping the heat on their race for fifth place.
Flint Hill: W 1, L 1; 13 – 15. (.309, .415, .564; 9.3 ip 7 er).
The Tornados continue to sit right on the .500 mark. As I’ve mentioned, this is a kindness to the rest of the league, saved from having tornados ripping back and forth through their positions in the league. But think of the poor residents of Flint Hill, or wherever the .500 mark is in the EFL, who have had a tornado whirling right on top of them for weeks straight.
Cottage: W 1, L 1; 5 – 5. (.190, .236, .417; 35 ip, 13 er).
The Cheese played precision .500 ball for the last two days, hewing even closer to the magic mark than the Tornados did. The only problem was they didn’t start those two days at .500. They barely budged, but it was from a .487 starting place.
Kaline: W 2, L 0; 9 – 5. (.263, .333, .463; 28 ip, 12 er).
A nice two-day stretch for the Drive. Highlight: Johnny Giovatella going 6 for 8 with 3 doubles and a walk. Lowlight? Daniel Hudson’s Royal Chulk, the exact twin to Matt Bush’s 4 earned runs in 0.3 innings).
DC: W 1, L 1; 12 – 14. (.266, ,329, .516; 12 ip, 6 er).
Dillon Gee struggled (5 ip,, 5 er), but the rest of the pitching staff did great (if over not enough innings.). The Balk are still sticking close to the Braves in the NL East.
