I thought the movie Unforgiven was powerful, but too violent. The movie Unbroken is also violent, but even more powerful; I recommend it highly, but the book was even better. Of similar movies made since Unforgiven, I didn’t see Unbreakable, Undead, Undiscovered, Undisputed, Unearthed, Unfaithful, Unleashed, Unstoppable, Unthinkable, or Untraceable (the last one because I never figured out where it was showing). (All those are actual movies, according to the internet. I never heard of most of them, either.)
John and I talked about this at church this morning, and I think I can speak for him when I say: we feel like we’re in the middle of the next Un-movie: Undeserving. The Wolverines do not deserve to be in a tight pennant race. They’ve stunk pretty steadily for the last three weeks. On the other hand, the Dragons have been just as bad, so it’s not like they really deserve to be in first place, either. We have the Unfortunate situation of our top teams seeming, at the moment, to be highly Unqualified for the position which one of them is about to secure. Unless something dramatic happens today (and maybe tomorrow), we find ourselves in the Undesirable situation of having to settle for an Uninspired , Unsatisfactory result to our pennant race. Since pennant races are Uncommon — if one gets ruined you don’t get another one for at least 12 months — it’s highly Unpleasant to have one go to waste.
Perhaps one of the frontrunners can put on a spectacular finish today and win some shred of pennant race honor — but the way they’ve been playing, this would be Unexpected. Perhaps Portland could rush in from the cold and rescue the season with a stunning two-Tornado-rocket surge — but that’s so crazy it’s essentially Unconceivable (if I understand the meaning of that word).
Well — I’d better move this along before I have to rename this post Underwhelming, Uninteresting, Unending, or even Unconscionable. On to this morning’s standings.

(Note: I am giving stats for the last two games here, since I haven’t published an update covering Friday’s games)
Haviland: W, 1, L 1; 2 – 3. (.122, .178, .195; 17.7 ip, 1 er). I saw Mark Weinert at the end of the GF homecoming football game yesterday. I’d been teaching all day, and he’d been in his office. We saw the Bruins’ last-play pass into the end zone get broken up, leaving George Fox on the short end of a 28-23 score.
Why am I telling you this? Because after I explained I had been unable to do the update because I was teaching all day, Mark warned me the Dragons had good pitching Friday. I worried the Wolverines would be buried again, but Mark said he didn’t know about that since he hadn’t seen anything about Haviland hitting. Well, as it turns out, there was a reason he hadn’t seen any Haviland hitting: there was only one Haviland hit all day Friday, and only one Haviland walk to go with it. (The hit was a Paul Goldschmidt home run, but that doesn’t really change my point.)
Old Detroit: W 1, L 1; 7 – 8. (.215, .288, .301; 16.3 ip, 7 er). That crummy hitting line has been pretty standard for the Woeverines lately. And it’s inflated by Brandon Drury’s 3 for 6 with a double and a walk — which he did in some kind of extended spring training, since he’s not active for the Wolverines. So, for September (and Oct 1), here are the 5 Wolverines leading the team in OPS:
* Brett Nicholas: 1.667 — he’s a desperately needed catcher! And he has 3 plate appearances: a double, a hbp, and a K. Stupid Rangers!
* Brandon Drury: 1.000 — he can play almost anywhere (poorly), has 104 plate appearances so he’s no flash in the pan — and he was allocated to the minors. Even though the W’s have injured players, none of them went on the DL, so Drury never got out of Old Toledo. Stupid W’s management! And stupid MLB GMs!
* Sean Rodriguez: .965. Hey! The W’s management is not totally brain dead. Rodriguez is 100% active, with 88 plate appearances.
* Mark Reynolds: .933. Remember the injured player I mentioned earlier? Reynolds broke his hamate or something after only 35 plate appearances. He never was sent to the DL. Stupid Rockies!
*Wilson Contreras: .925. Another badly needed catcher! And he’s never been injured, nor does he disappear into some crack where the manager forgets all about him like Nicholas does. Still, Contreras only has 49 plate appearances in Septober. Stupid Cubs!
Now do you see why this movie is called Undeserving?
Portland: W 0, L 2, 7 – 11. (.231, .268, .321; 3.3 ip, 3 er)
Pittsburgh: W 1, L 1; 9 – 8. (.252, .336, .427; 17.7 ip, 4 er). These two teams have surged in recent days. It’s too little, too late against even the sagging Dragons and Wolverines — but the race for 3d place still has some drama in it.
Canberra: W 1, L 1; 6 – 10. (.183, .286, .350; 22.3 ip, 11 er)
Peshastin: W 1, L 1; 13 – 13. (.284, .370, . 556; 4.0 ip, 1 er). These two teams have converged quickly over the last couple of days, and have a hot race of their own going for the privilege of being listed in the top half of the EFL standings.
Flint Hill: W 1, L 1; 11 – 10. (..250, .314, .406; 21.3 ip, 10 er). Just .002 shy of .500. Can the Tornados pull themselves over the line to the light side of the standings?
Kaline: W 0, L 2; 3 – 8. (.177, .254, .274; 4 ip, 0 er) The Drive are Becalmed in 8th place, not close enough to anyone to engender a race. They have become the Undriven.
Cottage: W 1, L 1; 10 – 10. (.278, .350, .431; 21 ip, 12 er) The Cottage have forced their way up the draft pick ladder, and are only a smidgeon from picking 4th.
DC.: W 0, L 2; 6 – 12. (.230, .319, .230; 9 ip, 3 er). The Balk still cling to 39th place, but could slip back past the Twins for 40th (or 1st pick in the draft!) today.
