.
Haviland: W, 5 – (-3). (.289, .413, .421; 19.3 IP, 2 ER). Carlos Martinez pitched 9 inning of earned-run free ball, and then the rest of the staff (5 more pitchers!) did another 10.3 innings with only 2 earned runs. That’s two great games in one day.
.
Cottage: W, 2 – (-6). (.143, .244, .257; 20 IP, 5 er). That hitting looks familiar to Wolverine eyes, but that pitching would be miraculous. It’s all three starters (Gray, Manaea, Severino) each of whom allowed 1 or 2 runs
.
Pittsburgh: L, 0 – 4. (.190, .242, .362; 5.3 ip, 2 er). Yesterday I singled out Jose Altuve as the only ex-Wolverine I root against. That was uncalled for. I don’t root against him, personally. I hope he has a great life now, and a long and happy one in the future. I just get tired of him leading the Allegheny attack every stinking day — like yesterday (2 for 3 with a walk).
.
Flint Hill: L, 9 – 12. (.407, .429, .667; 13.3 ip, 12 er). Did you ever notice how the Tornadoes are held together by nothing more than a few brads? When the brads go bad, they fall apart. Like yesterday: Brad Room (ie, Brad Zimmer, translated) went 0 for 2; Archie Brad(ley): 1 ip, 0 earned runs — not too too bad so far. But wait, we still have Brad Hand (comes pre-translated): 0.7 ip, 4 er — a nice sextuple chulk.
.
Kaline: W 2, L (-1), 13 – 3. (.407, .438, .661; 8 ip, 2 er). Yoeznis Cespedes came off the DL , went 2 for 5, and homered. Aaron Judge also celebrated: 3 for 4 with a double, homer and walk. So did Yonder Alonso: 7 for 10 (!) with two doubles. Put that together with Marcus Stroman taming the wild Mariners (7 ip, 1 er), and you have the recipe for a double-win day.
.
Peshastin: L, 4 – 12. (.250, .280, .438; 10 ip, 9 er). Trevor Williams surrendered 5 earned runs in 4 innings. Matt Wisler would have helped a little (6 ip, 4 er) except he is 0% active right now. Two guys with last names beginning with “W” cannot manage to put a W on the board.
.
Canberra: “L”, 2 – o. (.200, .333, .333; 13.7 ip, 5 er). Steven Matz is back in action! His first 2017 start for the Kangaroos went very well — 7 ip, 0 er, all allocated to relief– but the resulting win wasn’t resounding enough to capture the database’s attention.
.
Old Detroit: L, 3 – 6. (.300, .300, .360; 5.7 ip, 3 er). The good news here is this: for the first time maybe all season, the Wolverines had the luxury of 11 hitters! Compiling 50 plate appearances! ABUNDANCE! It’s like having a feast after two months of starvation. We still racked up some replacement AB at 3b while Machado is banished to his room for hurting himself. But from now on, barring injury, we’ll be erasing replacements… which is the same as saying “barring movement” so, yeah, there’ll be injuries. And, of course, these are the Wolverines, so many of the replacement players will be replaced by players playing at replacement levels, or worse, so this doesn’t mean we’ll be rocketing up the standings any time soon. It just means we’ll be batting an entire team of mediocrities, not just a skeleton crew. And I’m still missing some pitchers.
.
DC: “L”, 1 – (-1). (.143, .200, .286; 8 ip, 0 er). Gsellman gsailed through 6.7 scoreless innings (at least in earned run terms), and gsot gsood relief from Anthony Swarzak to complete the shutout.
