You work hard to overcome a difficult situation, and are just beginning to make progress, when two overpaid yahoos do you in even though you’ve shown them extraordinary kindness and loyalty. Bah.

.
Haviland: DNP: 2 – (-1). (.414, .500, .586; 6.3 ip, 2 er). Gary Sanchez clouted two homers, a double and two walks in 5 trips the plate. Rasmus, Sano and Souza also had big days on this day off.
.
Cottage: L, 2 – 3. (.152, .222, .303; 12.3 ip, 5 er). Wolveritis is still bedeviling the Cheese. Look, I’ve been trying to infect the Dragons, too… maybe I should trade them someone who’s afflicted and see if he can serve as a vector of contagion.
.
Pittsburgh: “W”, 7 – 7. (.273, .385, .455; no pitching). Without any pitching the Alleghenys could not turn a nice offensive display into a true win.
.
Portland: W 3, L 0; 21 – 9. (.417, .462, .667; 16 ip, 3 er). Portland was the only EFL team to register a true winning record yesterday — and they swept a triple header! This was partly due to excellent pitching by Jose Berrios and Chris Sale, each going 8 strong innings. The ‘Buds als fine hitting they displayed, although that only covered one games’ at-bats. They also got a boost when the Commissioner fixed a glitch that had deprived the team of three hitters’ stats yesterday.
.
Flint Hill: L, 4 – 6. (.242, .386, .424; 5.7 ip, 4 er). Daniel Murphy had a nice day– 3 for 5 with a homer. Keon Broxton hit a monster home run. But that’s pretty much it for the highlight reel from the Tornados’ loss in Kansas.
.
Kaline: DNP, (-1) – 0. (.314, .351, .486; 1 ip, 0 er). Yonder Alonso, Ben Gamel, Ian Desmond and Eric Sogard all achieved 1.000 OPSes on the day, but the team on the whole slipped a little on their off day in terms of average June performance so far.
.
Peshastin: W 1, L 2; 11 – 24. (.160, .250, .160; 0 pitching) The Pears got blindsided when the Rockies passed the Dodgers for first place in the NL West — adding not one but THREE games to the Pears’ June total. Expecting a day off instead of a triple hear, they could only rouse 6 hitters out of bed and only got 28 weak plate appearances out of them. That they won even one of the three games is a testament to these Pears’ grit.
.
Canberra: L, 3- 6. (.20o, .333, .333; 1.7 ip, 0 er). What can I say? Hopefully the Captain Kangaroo was at the stadium enjoying the Congressional Baseball Game because there wasn’t much to enjoy about the Kangaroos last night.
.
Old Detroit: W (-1), L 2; 4 – 17. (.188, .235, .438; 7 ip, 15 er). Crummy hitting, but that’s not what stands out here. After three successful days in a row, Rich Hill came out to sabotage it if he could. He did pretty well: 4 ip, 7 er. But his perfidy was dwarfed by Matt Moore’s 3 ip, 8 er chulk. Moore’s betrayal is particularly galling, since I have done nothing but show confidence in him for the last 6 years. I drafted him instead of Mike Trout. I stuck with him through his two years of idleness due to injuries. I awarded him a big 5-year, $9,250,000 per year contract, committing to caring for him and his family through 2021. And this is what he does?
.
In his defense, I should point out that hitter facing him BAPIPed .846. That means of the 13 balls they put into play, 11 dropped in for hits. Voros McCracken would say it was just bad luck. Maybe. But when the normal BABIP is about .3oo, yielding hits on 84.6% of balls in play begins to look like true “skill.” Either that or Wolverine fielders were conspiring to undermine Moore — is he a cancer in the clubhouse as well as a hemorrhage to the bank account? Compare Moore’s BABIP to Liriano’s .500 — .846 is at least an order of magnitude more significant.
.
DC: L, 5 – 10. (.269, .296, .385; 6.7 ip, 7 er). Robert Gsellman reverted to his profligate ways, yielding 7 er in 5 ip (on a .450 BABIP). Mediocre hitting could not come close to overcoming the deficit.
