… but we know better. The Alleghenys won their 100th game Saturday, with 20 games to go. Their lead over the Tornadoes (and everyone else) keeps growing. Cory Kluber is on his way to another Cy Young.
I’ve often said that no one within about 28 games at the start of the month is technically mathematically eliminated until the last pitch is thrown with at least one hitter still eligible to bat or one pitcher eligible to pitch. That last game could go for 1000 innings, and your batter or pitcher could go that entire stretch batting (or pitching) perfectly, compiling massive stats in your favor. But I realized today this isn’t true on the hitting side. Once your player fills up the maximum plate appearances at the position where you’ve allocated him, even if he bats an infinite number of times, he can only improve about one-ninth of your offensive stats. (If you were clever enough to allocate this immortal to all nine offensive positions, there would be no limit to how much he could improve your team’s numbers. If your team allowed 100 runs in a month, they’d only need to score about 750 in that month to officially go 28-0. Of course, you would need the first place team to go 0-28, and all the teams in between to do very badly, too…)
Anyway, we can smell the cookies in the oven. Smell them all you want, but unless you’re an Allegheny don’t expect to be allowed to touch them.

.
Pittsburgh: W, 10 – 1. (.388, .455, .510; 6.3 ip, 1 er). The weather is always so beautiful in Pittsburgh in the fall.
.
Flint Hill: L, 4 – 8. (.245, .383, .449; 13 ip, 9 er). Demoralization is spreading from the top down in Tornado land.
.
Haviland: W 1, L 1; 8 – 9. (.257, .350. .371; 8 ip, 3 er). Haviland is too close to Flint Hill, geographically, to successfully ward of contagious demoralization.
.
Cottage: W, 0 – 0. (.283, .304, .453; 13 ip, 3 er)
Portland: W, 0 – 0. (.170, .254, .17o; 18.7 ip, 7 er). A 0 – 0 result is very rare. Here we have two in a row! It’s like an eclipse: you might never see this again. Actually, Cottage won 0.4 – 0.0. Portland won 0.1 – 0.1. So they weren’t really identical.
.
Peshastin: W, 9 – 7. (.364, .462, .727; no pitching). Mitch Haniger is back in form. He went 3 for 4 with a triple and a homer. He’s OPSing 1.182 in September through Saturday’s games. If Jerry DiPoto posts a self-indulgent post about his small triumphs like I did yesterday, Haniger might be the featured guy — although he could rightfully tout other finds, too, like…
.
Kaline: W 1, L 1; 7 – 10. (.225, .295, 425; 10 ip, 4 er). … Ben Gamel. Or maybe even better, how he has helped reclaim Mike Zunino (OPSing 1.109 in September).
.
Old Detroit: W, 13 – 9. (.391, .472, .804; 8.3 ip, 7 er). The W’s passed an MLB team Saturday — maybe the Twins? — which means the Pears’ second pick in the Rookie Draft (formerly Old Detroit’s pick) slipped from 17th to 18th. The projected draft order as of Saturday morning is reproduced below. No other picks changed position.
.
Canberra: W, 10 – 5. (.375, .429, .875; 2.7 ip, 0 er). Jose Abreu hit for the cycle Saturday, leading the robust Kangaroo offense. While Andrew Albers was twirling 6 scoreless innings for the M’s, his half namesake Matt Albers was doing the same thing over 0.7 innings for the ‘Roos. (According to Baseball Reference, they don’t appear to be related. Matt was born in Texas and went to high school there. Andrew was born in Canada and went to high school in Saskatchewan. If I didn’t look this stuff up for you, how would you ever know it?).
.
DC: W, 5 – 2. (.387, .394, .548; 12 ip, 6 er). This has been a themeless post. So I can write whatever I want about the Balk. My favorite Balk is Welington Castillo. He’s a former Wolverine, although he did nothing for us. But the instant I let him go, he started being every bit as good as I thought he would be. His entire subsequent career has been one long, loud vindication of my scouting acumen. (Are you hearing this, Kyle Schwarber?) If I was Dave I’d apologize to him for holding him back. But I have a little more self confidence than Dave. I assume Welington learned something crucial in his brief (two months?) Wolverine career that has benefited other teams ever since: the Diamondbacks, the Orioles, the Balk… By the way, Mr. Castillo was leading the Balk in September OPS after Saturday’s games. His .986 edged out Kole Calhoun’s .905. Kalhoun only went 1 for 4 Sunday. Castillo only managed an 0 for 3 today in Cleveland’s 18th straight win, but he’s probably still the Orioles’ September OPS leader. (That would make him the SOPS leader, wouldn’t it? And if they play in October, he might be the OOPS leader.) (Actually, as the Orioles’ OPS leader, he’s already an OOPS leader.)
.
I think I’m done here for today.
