… and the Rosebuds are really the Greyhounds. They are chasing up the winning percentage at about the same pace since we started getting August updates. Can they both keep this up through the end of the season? If so, it might be pretty exciting!

.
Old Detroit: W, 6 – 1. (51 PA, .273, .373, .545; 13 ip, 2 er, 1.38 ERA) Ronald Acuna led off a game with a homer for the third time in a row. He hit another homer later in the game. I have never had a hotter player. Who, of course, I’ve just doomed by mentioning it.
.
Portland: “L”, 2 – 2. (46 PA, .190, .255, .381; 7 ip, 1 er).
.
Brookland: W (-1), L 2; 1 – 6. (49 PA, .200, .245, .222; 12 ip, 7 er, 5.25 ERA). When the leaders are sprinting forward, a double-loss day really hurts. The Outs will have to pick themselves up soon, or hope the leaders have to stop to catch a breath…
.
Pittsburgh: L, 7 – 8. (34 PA, .323, .353, .548; 4 ip, 4 er, 9.00 ERA) Ender Inciarte hit for 3/4 of a cycle, but walked instead of homering. Jurickson Profar played like the premier prospect he once was, matching Inciarte except he hit a sacrifice fly instead of walking. But Ryan Borucki borucked everything up with 4 er in 4 ip.
.
Cottage: L, 2 – 4. (29 PA, .296, .310, .370; 5 ip, 1 er, 1.80 ERA)
.
Flint Hill: W, 8 – 4. (23 PA, .409, .435, .727; 2 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA) Is Adalbert Mondesi for real? Well, he went 4 for 4 with two doubles — and three stolen bases.
.
Haviland: W, 8 – 4. (37 PA, .281, .351, .656; 4.7 ip, 1 er, 1.93 ERA) The Dragons matched the Tornados’ outcome but took a different path. No Mondesi-like super-performances, but more really good batting performances spread out over more players (5 daily OPSes over 1.000) plus a bit of good pitching.
.
Kaline: L, 3 – 4. (35 PA, .235, .278, .382; 1 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA) Tom fell to the bottom of the Johnson Melee, tripping on a dearth of pitching and inadequate hitting. Two notes about this:
1. Tom did a great job of diagnosing the situation in his comment to yesterday’s post.
2. “Dearth” is a fascinating word. It has “earth” in it, but the root has to be “dear”. Where there’s a dearth, something has become scarce, and thus “dear”. One girds his girth. Wide things have width. We measure our weal in our wealth. And we recognize how dear things are when we sense their dearth.
.
Peshastin: L, 1- 7. (33 PA, .194, .242, .258; 6.3 ip, 4 er, 5.68 ERA) Alen Hanson drove in a key run late in the game for the Giants, part of his 1.000 OPS, 2 for 4 day. I traded Hanson to the Pears for Jose Iglesias, to buttress my infield defense. Iglesias was having a good month until be bruised his hand and had to leave the game yesterday — good for him, anyway: .267, .313, .422. Hansen is batting .310 in August with a robust .793 OPS. Maybe the trade helped the W’s, since Iglesias is a very good defender… I don’t know.
.
DC: “W”, (-1) – 4. (43 PA, .105, .186, .211; no pitching)
