A late Baseball Prospectus update (sometime after 2:00) left me with only enough time for minimal updating today. Not much of my golden prose this time… hey! No! Why are you celebrating this? It’s a bad thing!
(At the moment I am listening to Mitch Keller’s Wolverine debut. He’s allowed 3 earned runs in 1.3 innings and has a man on second with only one out in the second. Before I could finish typing that, the Braves drove in the run, so now it’s 4 runs in 1.3 ip, back into triple chulk territory. Sigh.)

.
Portland: “L”, 13 – 5. (49 PA, .341, .388, .795; 15 ip, 8 er, 4.80 ERA). The Rosebuds hit 6 homers, two by Anthony Rendon, as seven of their 10 hitters OPSed 1.000 or better (Rendon all the way up at 2.600). Those seven covered every defensive position except 1b, where Goldschmidt could only manage a .900 OPS.
.
Flint Hill: L, 6 – 14. (42 PA, .250, .286, .475; 12 ip, 13 er, 9.75 ERA.) The Tornados couldn’t keep up because: 1.) They only had three hitters over 1.000 OPS) even though Bogaerts )(2.417 OPS) and Grandal (2.000 OPS) had brilliant days of their own. The main problem was the pitching, where James Paxton chulked (2.7 ip, 6 er).
.
Old Detroit: W, 7 – 7. (59 PA, .255, .356, .549; 5.3 ip, 4 er, 6.75 ERA). Bryan Reynolds achieved a rare 4.000 OPS by tripling in his only plate appearance. Eloy Jimenez (2 for 3 with a double, homer and walk) and Max Muncy (2 for 4 with 2 hr and a walk). Mallex Smith also topped 1.000 OPS, but after that things deterioriated at the plate. Chris Paddack stumbled (5 ip, 3 er), but Raisel Iglesias faceplanted (0.3 ip, 1 er).
.
Peshastin: L, 5 – 12. (44 PA,. 268, .318, .415; 5 ip, 6 er, 10.80 ERA). Pears pitchers allowed a few more runs, and their batters batted in a few fewer, than their Old Detroit rivals. Super-hot JaCoby Jones had another fine day: 2 for 3 with a double. Opener Cam Bedrosian went TWO scoreless innings, making the boundaries between openers, starters, and “featured” pitchers even harder to define.
.
Canberra: L, 2 – 5. (45 PA, .179, .289,. 231; 3.7 ip, 1 er, 2.45 ERA). The only star performance in Canberra Tuesday was Rhys Hoskins; 2 for 3 with a homer.
.
Pittsburgh: “L”, 6 – 3. (44 PA, .295, . 367, .477; 2.3 ip. 0 er, 0.00 ERA). 5 Alleghenys batters batted 1.000 OPS or better — but three of them were exactly 1.000 (Profar, Suzuki, and Swanson).
.
Kaline: “L, 3 – 1. (54 PA, .200, .315, .356; 14.3 ip, 5 er, .3.14 ERA). Yuli Gurriel shone Tuesday: 3 for 5 with a double, a homer and a stolen base. He was the brightest spot in the Drive lineup. Spencer Turnbull had the same honor among the Drive pitchers with his 6 shutout innings.
.
Haviland: L, 11 – 15. (55 PA, .313, .400, .583 — Happy Edgar Martinez Day, Dragons!; 6 ip, 10 er, 15.00 ERA — Happy Edgar Martinez Day, Dragon foes!). 7 Dragons OPSed over 1.000 (free Bader, Puig, Sanchez, Santana, Tapia, Tatis, and Wong). That’s every defensive position except shortstop. But the pitchers were even more generous than the hitters were onerous, especially Trey Wingenter’s triple chulk (1 ip, 3 er) and poor Mariner reliever Brandon Bannon’s infinite one (0 ip, 3 er).
.
Bellingham: W, 4 – 0. (40 PA, .290, .450, .742; 13 ip, 3 er, 2.08 ERA). I’d sure like that 2.08 ERA. And that 1.192 OPS. Those 4 runs might seem a little light for all that 1.192 OPS offense. This MIGHT be because yesterday’s stats included all of May’s numbers for several of the hitters. Fixing that today may have drained off some of that offense. Sort of like PERS.
.
Cottage: W 2, L (-1); 15 – 6. (46 PA, .415, .478, .707; 1.7 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA). Jorge Polanco was supposed to be the obscure Polanco, with Gregory being the star. Jorge went 3 for 3 with two double and a hit by pitch, for a sweet 2.667 OPS. Five other Pirates joined him in the trans-1.000 OPS zone.
.
Brookland: L, 2 – 9. (31 PA, .192, .323, .192; no pitching). Meanwhile, Gregory Polanco went 0 for 3. Gee, I wonder which Polanco used to be a Wolverine?
.
D.C.: “W”, 3 – 4. (39 PA, .156, .308, .344; 4 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA). Lots of good pitching in this part of the league. Also, note how the Balk almost salvaged their offense despite batting .156 by taking 6 walks an a hbp to lift their OBP to a reasonable .308. A little more slugging and/or some decent pitching (and no GIDP’s instead of the 2 they produced) and they’d have notched a REAL win.
