I read something pretty neat this morning, and to save you the article (which really only has one point), here is the gist of it:
From 1995-2019, the Mariners and Bruce Bochy have something in common (well, yesterday they did) – they each have a record of 1995-2019! That’s cool, and also, who has time to figure that kind of thing out? Even though it is cool, I don’t think it is something for which either Bruce nor the M’s are particularly proud about. But it is very close to .500, which isn’t too bad. So I did a quick search to see what the best team during that stretch, the hated Yankees, did in terms of record: 2357-1655 (.589).
That is a pretty big difference. It also doesn’t help that 1995 was the year the Mariners set the record for wins in a season only to get bounced by these same Yankees. Let’s not talk about them anymore.
How’d we do yesterday? Let’s check…I’ll just be giving game scores and no stats because I’m tired and it’s late (and today was technically Ron’s day but Serve Day (a George Fox tradition) and some other things got in the way.

Jamie:
Thanks for writing an update on my day. I just now (10:25 PM) sat down with enough time to try to write something. It was Serve Day for you, too, and yet you managed to squeeze out a post. An extra Serve Day project! Helping an elderly man through a big day.
So it may appear a bit ungracious of me, but… the M’s set the modern record for wins in a season (116) in 2001. Then, as you noted, got bounced out of the playoffs without reaching the World Series. Since then they’ve been suffering the Curse of … of what? The Pat Gillick Franchise Aftermath? The Flukey Heist of an All-Time Record?
Here’s another gentle correction: In 1995 it was the Mariners who bounced the Yankees in the game featuring Edgar’s double.
Shoot. I knew the dates seemed wrong in my brain. I should have remembered better the Yankees losing in 95. Oh well…
We Mariners fans only have two competitive team accomplishments to treasure: 1995’s miraculous run to the playoffs, topped off by Edgar’s double, and 2001’s 116 wins. Only three players were on both those teams: Edgar, Dan Wilson, and Jay Buhner, and Buhner was in his last season, making his first appearance on Sept. 1, and appearing in only 19 of the team’s last 27 games.
