Yesterday we looked at the ways in which EFL offenses have been performing this month compared to last month. Except for the Pears and Cheese, every team is projected to score somewhere between 10-60 fewer runs this month that last month, or an average of .1-3 runs fewer per game. If you are a team on the upper end of that range (Kaline, Haviland, Flint Hill, Portland – basically if your last name is Johnson), you have got to combat the dramatic loss of production with a significant decrease in runs allowed.
While ERA is not the only measure of runs allowed in the EFL, it is a very significant component of the equation. The table below shows each teams August and September ERA, and the difference between them – for each team, but also for the entire EFL:

You can see that our league average ERA decreased by .33 earned runs allowed in the month of September, a small improvement but nothing extremely significant. And if you remove the Tornadoes dramatic 3.08 improvement, the league ERA average is 4.82 or a small gain of .12.
I am sure there are other equations one could undergo to be more accurate, but by mere observation one can safely state that our ERA did not improve commensurate with the decline in runs scored per game.
What does this mean?
It could mean a lot of things, but mostly I think it means the best pitching in MLB this month was, for the most part, not on our teams. Which is pretty incredible, considering we own approximately 150 MLB pitchers.
We are down to the final two days, and we have drama unfolding before our eyes! How exciting.

Flint Hill: L, 5-6 (40PA; 18IP)

OPS: 0.721 |
The Tornadoes attempted to bench Berrios yesterday, who was going to provide surplus innings. However, we didn’t do it in time (before games began for the day), and so we lost. Which is ok, I think. However, if Kaline (now in second) wins both games today, and we lose today, then Sunday will be extremely interesting.
Kaline: W, 5-2 (66PA; 14.4IP)
AVG: 0.217 |
OBP: 0.288 |
SLG: 0.517 |
OPS: 0.805 |
The Drive have driven very close to the top of the standings. With two games today, and three starting pitchers going, two wins is not out of the question. Kevin Pillar continued his hot hitting, going 3 for 8 with two 2Bs, Wilmer Flores went 3 for 6 with 2 HRs and Willson Contreras hit two home runs of his own, the second to win the game. His bat flip caused a bit of consternation among the White Sox, who seem to have forgotten Tim Anderson’s bat flip just last season. The pitching was excellent, with Jose Urquidy going 7 innings and giving up 2 runs.
Peshastin: L, (-1)-3 (53PA; 7.7IP)
AVG: 0.156 |
OBP: 0.264 |
SLG: 0.244 |
OPS: 0.509 |
Well, apparently the Pear hitters don’t like the spotlight. One day after highlighting their excellent September, they choked and it cost them a spot in the standings and made their chance for a title a lot slimmer. Ryan Mountcastle and Tommy Edman both collected 2 hits, one of them a HR for Edman.
Haviland: W, 4-1 (55PA; 12.3IP)
AVG: 0.320 |
OBP: 0.370 |
SLG: 0.440 |
OPS: 0.810 |
Things would look a lot different if this line was more common in Haviland this month. Yu Darvish (will he win the Cy Young?) went 7IP and gave up 0 runs, and Raimel Tapia went 4 for 6 with a 2B while Kolten Wong went 3 for 7 with a 3B. If the Dragons can win both games today, they will also be in a good spot if the Tornadoes lose today.
Bellingham: W, 8-5 (45PA; 11.3IP)
AVG: 0.282 |
OBP: 0.378 |
SLG: 0.590 |
OPS: 0.968 |
The Cascades have awoken the past two days, once again scoring runs at a frenzied clip. Yesterday’s runs were manufactured by (who else?) Marcell Ozuna, who went 3 for 4 with a 2B and 2 BBs and Justin Turner who was 2 for 3 with 2 HRs. The pitching was so-so, but who cares when you score 8 runs?
Cottage: L, 1-10 (43PA; 7IP)
AVG: 0.179 |
OBP: 0.214 |
SLG: 0.205 |
OPS: 0.419 |
Yesterday’s loss is pinned almost entirely on Chris Paddack and Danny Duffy, who combined to go 4 innings and give up 7 runs. The hitting didn’t help, with only 7 hits (6 of them singles) and one 2B from Randy Arozarena.
Canberra: W, 6-5 (38PA; 4.3IP)
AVG: 0.333 |
OBP: 0.395 |
SLG: 0.515 |
OPS: 0.910 |
The Roos found some good fortune, scoring just enough runs to eke out a win. Alex Bregman hit a HR, and Eduardo Escobar added a 3B. And the pitching was good, led by Tyler Mahle, though it was small in nature.
DC: “L,” 6-6 (35PA; 7.4IP)
AVG: 0.313 |
OBP: 0.371 |
SLG: 0.531 |
OPS: 0.903 |
Great hitting from the Balk, led by Adalberto Mondesi’s 3 for 3 with a 2B, 3B, and 2 SBs. Dylan Cease gave up 5 runs is 4.7 innings, though, and the Balk lost.
Old Detroit: “L,” 7-7 (40PA; 17.7IP)
AVG: 0.286 |
OBP: 0.375 |
SLG: 0.486 |
OPS: 0.861 |
In terms of raw stats, it wasn’t quite an EMD, though it was close. Perhaps by allocations it turned out to be, but who will know?!? Kyle Schwarber and Will Smith each went 2 for 4 with a HR. But the pitching was not very good, with the stinkiest outing coming from either Andrew Heaney or Eric Lauer – I can’t decide who was worse…
Pittsburgh: W, 8-7 (35PA; 1IP)
AVG: 0.276 |
OBP: 0.400 |
SLG: 0.517 |
OPS: 0.917 |
The Alleghenys eked out a win of their own, on the strength of their hitting. Mike Moustakas hit 2 HRs, and Kevin Plawecki went 3 for 4.
Portland: W, 11-8 (38PA; 1IP)
AVG: 0.400 |
OBP: 0.421 |
SLG: 0.857 |
OPS: 1.278 |
Look at that offensive day! Travis Shaw went 3 for 4 with a HR, and Edwin Rios added in a HR of his own (he is averaging 1 HR every 10.6 ABs this season).
