Only two EFL teams got a real win yesterday – Peshastin and Old Detroit – even though the EFL has had a really good month in terms of wins. Take a look at this:
7 teams have winning percentages above .600. Here there are in order of winning percentage: Kaline, Canberra, Peshastin, Haviland, Cottage, Flint Hill, Old Detroit. In MLB, only 4 teams currently have a winning percentage over .600, and while we know that the EFL has been outperforming MLB teams this season, having so many EFL teams over .600 this month is quite amazing.
Yesterday, however, was not a good day in the EFL (unless you are a Pear or a Wolverine – and possibly a Cascade (a fake win) or Allegheny (a fake loss).

Peshastin: W, 6-5; 34PA, 5.7IP

The Pears are once again in first, thanks to every single hitter but Juan Soto collecting at least one hit yesterday. Out of their 9 hits, all were singles but one (a double by Mitch Haniger), but they added in 5 walks and scampered around the bases fast enough on those singles to rack up a win. The pitching was not great, but neither was it a ton of innings, and so they were able to survive, even thriving by jumping into the EFL lead once again.
Old Detroit: W, 7-2; 46PA, 8.3IP
AVG: 0.295 |
OBP: 0.326 |
SLG: 0.614 |
OPS: 0.940 |
The Wolverines were indeed fit for a dogpile, and after yesterday’s scrum, find themselves in second and a mere .3 games behind the Pears. The pitchers tossed 8.3 innings of scoreless baseball, led by a rebound performance from Jameson Taillon who threw 5 of those scoreless innings. OD sent 10 players to the plate, 2 more than the Pears, but they managed to also all get a hit except for poor Carlos Correa who went 0 for 5 after getting a day off on Saturday. Austin Riley continued his torrid month, adding in 2 more home runs to bring his monthly total to a team-leading 6. Not to be outdone, Rafael Devers added in his own home run to tie Riley for the monthly lead.
Haviland: L, 1-6; 47PA, 3.7IP
AVG: 0.286 |
OBP: 0.326 |
SLG: 0.405 |
OPS: 0.731 |
That offensive line looks good enough to score more than 1 run in a game. The problem is this: Amed Rosario, who went 4 for 5 with a double and triple, is 100% benched. And Jose Iglesias, who went 3 for 4 is 25% benched. The rest of the hitters collected a mere 5 hits, all of them singles. The Dragons were in first, but fell to third, however they only sit .4 games back of the Pears and thus are still in the thick of the hunt.
Flint Hill: L, 6-12; 36PA, 21.7IP
AVG: 0.323 |
OBP: 0.417 |
SLG: 0.452 |
OPS: 0.868 |
This loss is entirely pinned on Anthony DeSclafani and the 10 earned runs he gave up in 2 innings. Remove those and the Tornadoes might be in first place today. But just as the Dragons can’t add in Rosario’s great day, the Tornadoes can’t removed DeSclafani’s horrific day. The hitters did well, led by Teoscar Hernandez’s 3 hits including a home run, and for the first all season (maybe) we collected more walks than strikeouts. We will claim that as our victory today. The pitchers other than the one who shall remain nameless were very good, tossing 19 innings and giving up 5 runs.
Kaline: L, 3-8; 53PA, 12.3IP
AVG: 0.182 |
OBP: 0.321 |
SLG: 0.273 |
OPS: 0.593 |
The Drive were hurt yesterday by an all-around bad day for almost everyone. Jesse Winker heard the sound bite from our commissioner lambasting his performance, and went 2 for 5 with a home run. Kyle Lewis and Jonathan Schoop both chipped in 2 hits for Kaline. Max Fried pitched a stellar game, going 7 innings and giving up just one run. But JT Brubaker did not, giving up 7 runs in 5.3 innings.
DC: L, 3-4; 26PA, .7IP
AVG: 0.136 |
OBP: 0.269 |
SLG: 0.136 |
OPS: 0.406 |
Poor hitting and not enough pitching were the culprits yesterday. The Balk sent 7 batters to the plate and collected a team total of 3 hits, all of them singles. And they collected 4 walks, meaning (like many of the local 3rd/4th grade baseball games my son umpires) they got more walks than hits on the day. Jose Alvarado pitched two outs, and didn’t give up a run. But no one else wanted to pitch.
Canberra: L, 4-4; 39PA, 9.3IP
AVG: 0.206 |
OBP: 0.308 |
SLG: 0.294 |
OPS: 0.602 |
The offensive highlight for the Roos was either the 2 hits by Manuel Margot, or the three walks by Mitch Garver. Ok, maybe it was Javier Baez’s walk-off home run. Whichever you choose, know that it wasn’t quite enough to eke out a win. Three total pitchers appeared for Canberra, and all three of them gave up a run or two, which isn’t awful, but again, not quite enough to get a win. It was enough, however, to sneak .1 games closer to the Pears, and now the Roos are an even 7 games behind, in their own no-man’s land in the standings.
Cottage: L, 3-6
AVG: 0.233 |
OBP: 0.286 |
SLG: 0.367 |
OPS: 0.652 |
The Cheese continued the EFL’s string of losses by having only 4 of 10 hitters collect a hit while not getting quite enough good innings from their pitchers. Francisco Mejia went 2 for 3 with a home run, and the middle infield of Marcus Semien and Trea Turner combined for 4 singles in 9 at bats. Robert Gsellman continued his good month of May, going 3 innings without giving up a run, but Michael Fulmer gave up 2 runs without recording an out.
Pittsburgh: “L,” 8-5; 27IP, no pitching
AVG: 0.280 |
OBP: 0.333 |
SLG: 0.680 |
OPS: 1.013 |
Pittsburgh earned the best offensive performance of the day being the only team with an OPS over 1.000. Max Muncy, Dansby Swanson and Andrew Vaughn all hit home runs, and Jose Altuve collected two hits (the only player with more than 1 hit). Impressively, the Alleghenys only struck out 3 times in 27PA.
Portland: L, 8-11; 28PA, 21IP
AVG: 0.292 |
OBP: 0.393 |
SLG: 0.542 |
OPS: 0.935 |
The Rosebuds had nearly as many innings pitched as they had PAs, which is impressive and rare – and really only possible in the EFL. Max Kepler went 2 for 4 with a home run, and Alex Avila went 2 for 3 with 2 doubles. On the pitching side, the Rosebuds had two pretty good outings and 2 not-so-good outings. Mike Foltynewicz and Jon Gray combined for 3 runs allowed in 13 innings, Folty tossing 7 of those without giving up a single run (that’s right, all 3 belonged to Gray). Dylan Bundy and Matt Harvey, however, gave up 9 runs in 7 innings.
Bellingham: “W,” 2-2; 47PA, 7IP
AVG: 0.175 |
OBP: 0.277 |
SLG: 0.250 |
OPS: 0.527 |
The Cascades were awesome on the mound and not awesome at the plate. Justin Dunn and Michael Wacha were the pitchers, and they were great! Brad Miller led all hitters going 2 for 4 with a home run. 5 other hitters got a single each, but it wasn’t quite enough for a real win.
