The Wolverines held onto their lead, though it got a tiny bit slimmer. We are heading into the final weekend of May, Memorial Day Weekend. How will it end?

Old Detroit: “W,” 1-1; 30PA, 7IP
AVG: 0.074 |
OBP: 0.167 |
SLG: 0.111 |
OPS: 0.278 |
An excellent pitching performance saved an awful day at the plate. The two New Yorkers, Marcus Stroman and Jonathan Loaisiga, combined for 7 innings of scoreless pitching in order to keep the Wolverines just out of reach for the new second place team, the Dragons. it was a good thing, too, because the hitters had an uncharacteristically bad day for this latest version of the Wolverines. Tommy Edman and James McCann both collected one hit, and that was it for the entire team.
Haviland: W, 3-(-3); 31PA, 18.7IP
AVG: 0.192 |
OBP: 0.300 |
SLG: 0.346 |
OPS: 0.646 |
The Dragons’ excellent pitching day catapulted them over the Pears into second place heading into the final weekend of May. Five pitchers appeared, the best day coming from Pablo Lopez who gave up 2 runs in 7 innings. Spencer Howard had a similarly good day, going 4 innings and allowing 1 run. But the hitters had a pretty lackadaisical day, besides the recently traded Gary Sanchez, who went 2 for 3 with a home run. The Dragons climbed a half game closer to the Wolverines and are now .8 games back.
Peshastin: L, 5-6; 27PA, 7IP
AVG: 0.250 |
OBP: 0.333 |
SLG: 0.458 |
OPS: 0.792 |
The Pear plans to pursue a place atop the EFL standings were put on pause for the day as they swapped places with the Dragons and fell a half game further behind the Wolverines. Every hitter but two collected a hit, with Tom Murphy collecting 2 (one of them a home run). Willie Calhoun added the only other extra base hit, a triple. The pitching was the Pears’ problem, though. Namely, Alex Wood. He pitched 6 innings and gave up 4 of the 6 runs surrendered by the Pears yesterday. It probably didn’t help that Genesis Cabrera faced 3 batters and didn’t get a single one of them out – 2 hits and walk surrendered.
Kaline: W, 10-2; 35PA, 1IP
AVG: 0.344 |
OBP: 0.371 |
SLG: 0.781 |
OPS: 1.153 |
The Drive by far had the best offensive day in the EFL, accruing 11 hits (2 doubles and 4 home runs) on their way to an easy win. Willy Adames, freed from the tyranny of Tampa Bay’s winning ways, went 4 for 5 with a double and a home run. Three other hitters added home runs – Aaron Judge, Yermin Mercedes and Jonathan Schoop – and the team managed to only strike out 3 times in 35 plate appearances. The Drive did exactly what they needed to do to stay ahead of the Tornadoes, and climbed .5 games closer to the Wolverines while staying a half game ahead of Flint Hill.
Flint Hill: “L,” 7-4; 48PA, 6.3IP
AVG: 0.200 |
OBP: 0.234 |
SLG: 0.533 |
OPS: 0.767 |
The offense for the Tornadoes was better than the raw numbers due to Clint Frazier (0 for 6) and Keston Hiura (0 for 4) being benched. With those out of the way, the OPS was .983 which is how 7 runs were scored. How the team lost, however, is a mystery that will someday be corrected. Austin Meadows went 2 for 4 with a triple and a home run, Mookie Betts added in a triple, and Bo Bichette hit 2 home runs. But the K/BB ratio was 14 to 1. Ouch. The pitching wasn’t as good as you see here, either, since German Marquez and his 6 inning, 62 pitch complete game was entirely on the bench. If you read Ron’s update last night, you’ll note that between James Kaprielian and Marquez, the benched Tornadoes have thrown 13 innings giving up 1 total run.
DC: W(1), L(1), 10-7; 23PA, 7IP
AVG: 0.238 |
OBP: 0.304 |
SLG: 0.286 |
OPS: 0.590 |
The Balk were able to use some of their stored up innings and plate appearances, with the Mets playing a double header yesterday. And it went ok for DC. Dylan Cease was the star, going 6 innings and allowing 1 run. He struck out 10 total batters, which is impressive considering he faced 25 total. Ryan McMahon was the lone bright spot for their offense (if you don’t include the released PAs they got, which were good). He got two hits and stolen base on the day. DC kept pace with the Tornadoes, gaining .1 games on the Wolverines.
Canberra: W(2), L(0), 9-4; 16PA, 15IP
AVG: 0.133 |
OBP: 0.188 |
SLG: 0.133 |
OPS: 0.321 |
It might be best if we focus only on the pitching line for the Roos. It was an excellent day on the mound for Canberra, who almost got more innings pitched than plate appearances (15IP to 16PA). Chris Flexen muscled his way to 7 innings and 0 runs allowed. Joey Lucchesi and Caleb Smith added another 6 innings, giving up only 1 run, and two other relievers combined for 2 innings and 1 run. I suppose the few plate appearances helped the Roos, because what they got was simply horrible. Vladito is mourning the move away from Dunedin, collecting a wimpy single. JBJ joined him with one single, his first walk-off ever, but the 4 batters who appeared struck out once every 3 at bats (which I suppose is somewhat normal these days). Canberra climbed .3 games closer to the top with their two wins.
Cottage: L, 4-5; 28PA, 4.7IP
AVG: 0.182 |
OBP: 0.321 |
SLG: 0.318 |
OPS: 0.640 |
The Cheese pitchers wanted to win, but the hitters did not reciprocate (which is a marked change from April). Ryan Weathers and Robert Gsellman combined for 1 earned run in 4.7 innings. Outside of Marcus Semien, who went 2 for 6 with a home run and 2 walks, not much else good happened. Isan Diaz collected 2 walks, so I suppose that counts as good. But it wasn’t enough, and the Cheese fell .3 games further back from the lead and almost 2 games behind the Roos.
Pittsburgh: W, 5-(-1); 22PA, 13IP
AVG: 0.200 |
OBP: 0.273 |
SLG: 0.450 |
OPS: 0.723 |
The poor hitting/good pitching EFL theme flowed downriver all the way to the Alleghenys. But for them it ended up in a convincing win. Tyler Anderson redeemed himself with 5 innings and 2 runs, and Sonny Gray did even better, giving up 0 runs in 6 innings (and only 2 total hits surrendered). The Allegheny hitters got 4 hits and three of them were for extra bases – a double each for Andrew Vaughn and Garrett Hampson, and a home run for Max Muncy.
Portland: L, 1-6; 25PA, 1IP
AVG: 0.125 |
OBP: 0.160 |
SLG: 0.250 |
OPS: 0.410 |
The Rosebuds had flowery pitching, if only for one inning, and thorny hitting. The result? A lopsided loss. Daniel Norris pitched one inning and did not give up a run. Tyler O’Neill provided the only exciting offense, a long home run. He also struck out three times.
Bellingham: L, 5-10; 33PA, 4IP
AVG: 0.241 |
OBP: 0.333 |
SLG: 0.448 |
OPS: 0.782 |
While the Cascades await their new hurler, Anthony DeSclafani, they are racking up some not so great pitching performances. Yesterday it was two pitchers, Michael Wacha and Devin Williams, who each gave up 2 runs in their short outings. Jacob Nottingham showed there was much ado about himself after all, clubbing a home run in 2 at bats. Rhys Hoskins added his own home run, but it wasn’t enough to send the Cascades home victorious.
