League Wide Memo:
Dear EFL employees,
It has come to our attention that there is a Wolverine running wild through company headquarters. We’d like to remind you that Wolverines should be considered dangerous, and avoided at all costs. We have learned, however, that this particular Wolverine has a soft spot for pickles, and so we have strategically placed jars of pickles around the building in order for you to protect yourselves from harm. If you encounter this rabid Wolverine, simply wave a pickle in his direction, and his demeanor will quickly change from dreadful to docile, giving you an opportunity to apprehend him before his terror overcomes us all, forcing us to vacate the building.
It is up to you, EFL employees, to stop the Wolverine reign. The sooner, the better. Now get to work!
Sincerely,
EFL Fans

The Wolverines responded to their owners complaints yesterday with a resounding day, adding not one but two wins and removing a loss. So many Wolverine hitters did well it might make more sense to mention who didn’t do well – James McCann went 0 for 2, and Tommy Edman went 0 for 4. The rest? JP Crawford, Carlos Correa and Austin Riley all collected 3 hits apiece, and Gavin Lux added 2. The one blemish might be the lack of slugging, with only one home run and 2 doubles amidst a 13 hit attack. But even if the hitters would have not shown up yesterday, the pitchers certainly did. Chris Paddack had the worst Wolverine outing, giving up 2 runs in 6 innings. Yes, that was the worst. Logan Gilbert tossed 6.7 innings giving up one run, and Walker Buehler topped them all with 6 innings and 0 runs. A trio of relievers appeared an inning each without surrendering a run, and the Wolverines added 1.2 games to their lead over the Pears.
Peshastin: W(1), L(1), 8-10; 34PA, 3IP

After last night’s OD performance, coupled with last night’s Pear performance, Peshastin should feel grateful to still be within 2.7 games of first place. I am not sure how the Pears eked one win out of that stat line, but they did, and for that they should be commended. No player collected more than one hit, and each pitcher gave up a run. We could applaud Jazz Chisholm for his double, but would have to mention his 3 Ks, too. Yoan Moncada had the other double, but did nothing else. The Pears now need to regroup and show the Wolverines that a tasty fruit cannot be intimidated so easily.
Kaline: “W,” 4-5; 30PA, 1IP
AVG: 0.192 |
OBP: 0.267 |

The Drive were more like the stranded-on-the-side-of-the-road yesterday. Except for Winker, who continues to have an excellent season. He went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and an HBP. And Bobby Dalbec showed a little bit of life yesterday, playing back in his old position (3B) and hitting a homerun. Mark Melancon pitched one inning and didn’t give up a run. But the Drive fell another game behind OD, though they maintained their .5 game lead over the Balk and found themselves in third place, overcoming the Dragons (or more likely taking advantage of a dreadful Dragon day).

The Balk outscored their opponents but couldn’t quite summon the courage to win the game. The hitters can’t be blamed, as you can see. 10 batters appeared on the day, and all but one (Shed Long, who isn’t allocated) got a hit. Myles Straw, Joey Gallo and Jorge Alfaro all led the team with two hits, and the rest got one each. Xander Bogaerts, Ryan McMahon and Matt Chapman all added a home run as their lone hit. The pitchers, however, can be blamed. Martin Perez got lit up by the Blue Jays, allowing 5 runs in 1.3 innings (including 3 home runs). The other starter, Bruce Zimmerman, gave up another 3 runs in 5.7 innings. After beginning day 3.3 games out of first place, the Balk fell to 4.3 games out of first.
Flint Hill: W, 13-1; 39PA, 8.3IP
AVG: 0.382 |
OBP: 0.436 |
SLG: 0.853 |
OPS: 1.289 |
The Tornadoes had their best day of the year, I think, helped in large part by our favorite MLB team getting lit up by the Blue Jays. Bo Bichette and Teoscar Hernandez combined to go 7 for 11 with 2 doubles and 3 home runs. Mookie Betts joined the fun, going 2 for 3 with his own home run, and the offense put up 13 runs on the day. Carlos Rodon and Nick Tepera combined for 8.3 innings pitched, allowing only one earned run on 1 hit. The Tornadoes were the only EFL team to gain in winning percentage on the Wolverines, inching .010 points closer to the top.
Haviland: L, 3-15; 41PA, 8.3IP
AVG: 0.237 |
OBP: 0.293 |
SLG: 0.316 |
OPS: 0.608 |
It was only one loss but it was a terrible tumble on this dreadful Dragon day. From third place to 6th place on one day, thanks to awful pitching and nearly awful hitting. Domingo German and Pablo Lopez were uncharacteristically bad, combining to give up all 11 runs in 7.3 innings. On the offensive side, Nelson Cruz had two hits including a home run, but every other hit was only a single, and 5 players didn’t get any hits, combining to go 0 for 18. The surprising thing is that the Dragons only had 3 strikeouts, meaning they hit the ball, just right at people (which everyone knows you shouldn’t do). The Dragons lost a whopping 2.2 games off the leading Wolverines, and now sit 4.6 back, tied with the Tornadoes (good company, if you ask me).
Canberra: W, 7-5; 31PA, 9IP
AVG: 0.321 |
OBP: 0.355 |
SLG: 0.607 |
OPS: 0.962 |
Canberra had a great day at the plate, getting 4 extra base hits out of nine total hits. Vladito was another recipient of awful Red Sox pitching, going 3 for 5 with a homerun. Kyle Tucker added another 3 hits, including a double and a homerun. Eric Haase continued to hit well, adding one double in 3 at bats. On the mound, Joey Lucchesi was very good, going 5 innings an surrendering only one run while striking out 6. But Dane Dunning ran into a hot Angels team, giving up 4 runs in 4 innings.
Cottage: W, 9-7; 36PA, no pitching
AVG: 0.323 |
OBP: 0.389 |
SLG: 0.548 |
OPS: 0.937 |
Great hitting was able to overcome no pitching, and the Cheese not only won but managed to once again sneak past the Alleghenys. In a great convergence of fandoms, Zach McKinstry led the Cheese with 3 hits, including a double and a walk. Marcus Semien (you guessed it, also facing the Red Sox) continued his torrid season, going 2 for 4 with one of the Blue Jays 8 home runs yesterday. Randy Arozarena added his own homerun, and the Cheese, though tied in record with Pittsburgh, are .1 game ahead in the standings.
Pittsburgh: “W,” 2-2; 27PA, 7IP
AVG: 0.160 |
OBP: 0.222 |
SLG: 0.200 |
OPS: 0.422 |
With a solid day on the mound, even one more hit might have made the difference for Pittsburgh on a day when they got jumped by the Cheese in the standings. Will Crowe, the only Pittsburgh starter, went 5 innings giving up 2 runs. Two relievers, Bryan Abreu and Lou Trivino added two more innings of scoreless pitching to give the Allegheny hitters a great chance of winning. But they hitters just couldn’t quite do enough at the plate. Trevor Larnach tried his hardest to summon the Beaver magic, going 2 for 4 with a double, but the team as a whole collected only two more hits on the day, not enough to outscore their opponents.
Portland: W(0), L(-2), 11-16; 40PA, 2IP
AVG: 0.206 |
OBP: 0.325 |
SLG: 0.471 |
OPS: 0.796 |
The June monsoon in Portland has certainly dampened the spirits of the Rosebuds. At a time of year when they should be in full bloom, they had to close up in order to withstand the much-needed rain the area received. Luis Urias hit a triple, and Ryan Jeffers and Andrew Benintendi each added a home run. The Rosebuds managed to score 11 runs, but their pitching wasn’t able to match that potency, giving up 16 runs in their two losses.
Bellingham: “W,” 3-7; 28PA, 3.3IP
AVG: 0.200 |
OBP: 0.286 |
SLG: 0.320 |
OPS: 0.606 |
The Cascades also did not enjoy the rain, though you would think mountain ranges are impervious to such displays of weather. Rowdy Tellez took advantage of his one AB against Red Sox pitching, hitting a ball over the fence for the 8th Blue Jay home run on the day. DJLM added two hits, trying to either escape the confines of New York or perhaps spark his team to more inspired play. Michael Wacha added 2 innings pitched, giving up one earned run for the best pitching performance of the day for Bellingham.
