Someone needs to tell the Wolverines that one brick does not make a wall. The best way to create a beautiful (at least beautiful to the rest of us) wall is to lay one brick after another, in succession. And better to do so now than when it might be hotter in August…

Old Detroit: W(1), L(-1), (-5)-(-8); 24PA, 7.1IP

OBP: 0.167 |
SLG: 0.143 |
OPS: 0.310 |
The Wolverines have Logan Gilbert and Logan Gilbert alone to thank for their small rebound from yesterday’s brick. He went 7 innings and gave up 0 runs – an excellent outing! But if you look beyond Logan you will see that there were still many bricks being laid – Sam Clay went 2/3 of an inning, giving up a run. Six batters appeared and only collected two hits total. The Wolverines lost 8 runs from their Runs Scored total, though they did gain back a bigger lead, now 4.2 games over DC.
DC: DNP, (-1)-0; 17PA, no pitching
AVG: 0.294 |
OBP: 0.294 |
SLG: 0.353 |
OPS: 0.647 |
Not a lot happened in DC yesterday, which is too bad, because a good day could have propelled them even closer to the Wolverines. They collected 5 hits (one double). Ryan McMahon led the way going 2 for 5.
Flint Hill: W(-1), L(1), 0-4; 18PA, 18.7IP
AVG: 0.412 |
OBP: 0.444 |
SLG: 0.941 |
OPS: 1.386 |
Yesterday I needed to activate a 3B to take Anthony Rendon’s spot since he went on the IL (again – now three times this season!). I chose Patrick Wisdom over Brad Miller, because Miller had been only pinch hitting the past week. Well, last night Miller went 3 for 5 with 3 home runs, and I got none of them. Where’s the wisdom in that? I also had Zach Eflin sitting, who tossed 6 innings of scoreless baseball. I did, however, have Yu Darvish activated, he and his 6 runs in 3 innings. Oh well.
Peshastin: DNP, 1-(-1); 24PA, 1IP
AVG: 0.227 |
OBP: 0.292 |
SLG: 0.500 |
OPS: 0.792 |
The Pears collected two home runs – one from Mitch Haniger and the other from Jazz Chisholm – but did little else. I suppose Juan Soto going 2 for 4 with 2 walks is worth noting, especially since the Pears need their offense to get moving, and he is the cog that makes the machine work. Kendall Graveman was the lone pitcher, tossing 1 scoreless inning. The Pears did manage to overtake the Drive, and now lead them by .3 games, while falling to 6.8 games behind the Wolverines.
Kaline: L, 4-7; 35PA, 1IP
AVG: 0.233 |
OBP: 0.343 |
SLG: 0.267 |
OPS: 0.610 |
The Drive are getting to where Tom wants them to be, right in the middle. And all it took was a few days! Kaline added to it’s surplus ABs, getting 35, which surprisingly wasn’t the most on what was a fairly quiet day for the league. Omar Narvaez led the way, going 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. Mark Melancon pitched one scoreless inning, but that was all the pitching they could muster.
Canberra: DNP, 2-1; 12PA, 1IP
AVG: 0.300 |
OBP: 0.417 |
SLG: 0.700 |
OPS: 1.117 |
The Kangaroos took an off day to hone their hitting skills, getting more in 12 PAs than several EFL teams did in twice as many appearances. Eric Haase continued his torrid month (7 homeruns this month), going 2 for 4 with (you guessed it) a homerun. Kyle Tucker added a double, just for fun. James Karinchak uncharacteristically gave up a run in one inning of work. The Roos are now only 1.5 games back of the Drive.
Haviland: L, 1-6; 35PA, 6IP
AVG: 0.121 |
OBP: 0.194 |
SLG: 0.152 |
OPS: 0.346 |
It was the Dragons who bested the Drive in total PAs, but Haviland’s output was paltry, getting only 4 hits and 3 walks in those 36 appearances. Ramon Laureano was the best hitter, going 2 for 5 with a double. Tarik Skubal toed the rubber, giving up 3 earned runs in 6 innings. The Dragons are an even 10 games back now, setting their sights on the trade deadline and hoping for a good return for Nelson Cruz.
Cottage: W(1), L(1), 12-10; 16PA, no pitching
AVG: 0.188 |
OBP: 0.188 |
SLG: 0.563 |
OPS: 0.750 |
The Brewers did not play two games yesterday, so I think there must have been a data entry error in the standings during yesterday’s update. Thought they got no pitching, they still managed one win through what must have been some stored up PAs. Trea Turner was the only Cheese to get a hit, and he got three of them – two of them home runs.
Pittsburgh: DNP, (-2)-(-3); 15PA, 7.7IP
AVG: 0.200 |
OBP: 0.200 |
SLG: 0.200 |
OPS: 0.400 |
An excellent day on the mound erased 3 runs from the Allegheny monthly runs allowed total, most of it due to Frankie Montas who went 6.7 innings, giving up one run and striking out 10. Garrett Hampson’s 0 for 6 with 4 strikeouts really hurt. WIthout him, the team was 3 for 9.
Bellingham: W(-1), L(1), 0-2; 14PA, 7IP
AVG: 0.250 |
OBP: 0.357 |
SLG: 0.417 |
OPS: 0.774 |
The Cascades were so close to overtaking the Alleghenys, but will have to wait another day or two to make their move. Tyler Mahle tossed 6 innings, giving up 3 runs and 4 walks. Keston Hiura hit 2 doubles in 4 trips to the plate.
Portland: DNP, 1-0; 28PA, 5IP
AVG: 0.227 |
OBP: 0.357 |
SLG: 0.364 |
OPS: 0.721 |
A fairly normal day in terms of quantity, it wasn’t enough to move the needle on a day when the Rosebuds did not have a game. Max Kepler stayed hot, with 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate, and his Twins teammate, Ryan Jeffers, added a home run.
