So here is where we stand on our off-season to-do list (current version):
_√_ 1. (Dave) Create new “E” draft status for players on EFL rosters who are not draftable. Leaves “n/a” for non-EFL players not draftable. (Ron) Apply the E to all carried-over EFL players._√_ 2. (Dave) create a couple of time-saving tweaks to draft lists: automatic 2027 contract status for draftable Rookies, and automatic $250,000 salaries for 2099 rookies._√_ 3. (Ron) Update draft status of all players whose EFL contracts expired in 2022._√_ 4. (Ron) Process EFL transactions since season’s end, updating draft status.___ 5. (Dave) Make sure Ron didn’t mess up any transactions, esp. DFAs._√_ 6. (Ron) Go through MLB transactions from Sep 1 2022 to date to find draftable FA. (This is a long job…)
_√_ 6A. (Ron) Update MLB trades list, including players’ draft status. (Also an ongoing job)(NOTE: These are up to date through January 3, 2023)
_√_ 7. (Ron or Dave) Add remaining 2022 debutants to the draft as Rookies.___ 8. (Ron) Update defense ratings for all rostered and draftable players. (Also a long job.)___ 9. (Ron) Set a date for the Rule 5 draft.
___ N. (Ron) Keep the draft lists (esp. FA) updated as MLB players sign contracts, get cut, etc.
One advantage of visiting relatives whose main form of entertainment is sitting around and talking: I could, with minimal disruption of family plans, get all the FA creations from Sep 1 through yesterday done! (Also some early morning work while waiting for others to wake up.) My next big job is defensive updating, which I do not expect to get done while still here in Indiana… but it should only be a few days later. It’s about 4 hours of work, about 1/3 as long as updating the FAs.
As of right now there are 499 FAs on the list. That is a little smaller than most years at this phase, mostly because I started afresh at Sept 1, 2022, with no FA’s carrying over from old lists. Some FA’s created during earlier parts of the 2022 season got picked up because transactions marking them as FA’s happened after Sep 1. There are a few (a half-dozen?) even older FA’s also picked up this way. If you know of someone who played in 2021, but not in 2022, who is expected to play in 2023, but is not on the list, please let me know ASAP. (Michael Conforto would be such a person, but I already caught him and he’s on the list.) Remember: the LIST determines the people who can be drafted, not the rule. The rule SHOULD drive the list, but if I slip up, the LIST governs. This is so we all play with the same access to the information we need.
The other next step is to get our Rule 5 draft scheduled. As a reminder, in the Rule 5 each team gets to protect 20 players. Then we all draft in our draft order from each other’s unprotected players, taking on the player and his contract. Teams can add no more than 2 players, and lose no more than 2.
Look for a Doodle to help us find a good day and time for the Rule 5 draft.
