Haviland hava nagilas again with the Wolverines.
At least, I think the hava nagila is a dance. We sang a song entitled Hava Nagila in choir class in junior high school, I think, although this would have been in the late 1960’s. I have never forgotten the tune, in a minor key, mysterious and exciting. I had the impression then that the hava nagila was sort of an Israeli square dance. I clearly have done no research on a topic I haven’t thought about since the Nixon Administration, so, yeah, I’m writing right up to my usual standards here.
Anyway, the Dragons dos-i-doed yesterday with their Old Detroit rivals. Again. And, hopeably, not for the last time. Duh-duh, dadila duh duh, dadila duh duh, dadila duh duh-li-duh-duh!

Haviland: W, 4 – 2.
Old Detroit: L, 2 – 4. See? Notice the symmetry? I told you they were dancing.
Portland: W, 6 – 3.
Pittsburgh: W 2, L (-1); 12 – 0. Don’t be lulled by the music: the Alleghenys are not dancing. They are storming the place! TWELVE to NOTHING!? They didn’t just step on their partners’ toes — they trampled their partners to rush the stage. Are we just going to let this happen?
Canberra: L, 4 – 12.
Peshastin: W, 2 – 0. At about the same time I was singing the Hava Nagila, Frank Sinatra or someone of his ilk was singing about two ships passing in the night. (I think it was an old song even then, but still, stars of the previous generation liked to sing it.) I never quite entirely understood that song, and still don’t (see my earlier comments about the extent of my research backing this post), but I think it’s something like what the formerly-first-place ‘Roos and dreaming-of-first-place Pears are about to do. In the night, of course. There are no sad songs about ships passing in the daytime. My mental image all these years is of these lonely ships sort of lining up, like boys and girls used to do in eighth grade dance class on opposite sides of the gym, waiting for the sun to go down so they (the ships — this is about ships, remember?) can pass in the night.
Anyway, Sunday morning the Pears were 1.7 games behind the Kangaroos. Today they are 0.5 games behind the ‘Roos. You can see what’s about to happen.
Flint Hill: L, 2 – 3.
Cottage: L, 2 – 4. The Cheese is getting… I don’t know, “peared”, maybe? — because Peshastin is supposed to be THEIR dance partner. Instead the Pears are about to leave them three places behind in the standings. And the Cheese find themselves stuck with this windy Flint Hill. And these two ships aren’t passing. They’re sort of jointly becalmed in the night. And the day, too. It may be sad, but it isn’t poignant.
(I probably shouldn’t mention this, but I heard Phil Smith Friday evening crowing about how the Cheese “can’t” pass the Pears. Put that on your bulletin board, Dave!)
Kaline: W, 5 – 1.
D.C.: W, 3 – 3. The Drive and the Balk aren’t dancing. No, it’s more like Mom told Kaline to let his little brother tag along, and now Kaline has to keep waiting for the little twerp to catch up, only he keeps stopping to look at bugs and pet disinterested kitties and ask Kaline to help him tie his shoes again. How is Kaline supposed to keep up with his friends if he has to take care of D.C.? Mom might think he’s adorable, but he’s ruining Kaline’s day.
