Portland: L, (-1) – 4; (35 PA, .206, .229, .294; 0 ip, 2 er, Infinite ERA).
I love the “Infinite ERA” part. Thank you, Fernando Romero. More of that, please!! But I also love the weenie offense. Whatever you did Thursday, Mark, keep doing it! (As long as it wasn’t really a bad day for you in other departments of your life. I mean, I do have some perspective.)
Flint Hill: L, 4 – 7; (36 PA, .200, .333, .300; 7 ip, 4 er, 5.14 ERA).
Old Detroit: W, 9 – 5. (42 PA, .324, .405, .622; 5 ip, 1 er, 1.80 ERA).
A Wolverine pitcher did well!! Yusei Kikuchi pulled off 5 good innings. He had to quell a bases-loaded rally… but he did it. It’s a miracle!
Peshastin: “L”, 7 – 5. (30 PA, .333, .400, .407; 9.3 ip, 4 er, 3.86 ERA).
Canberra: W, 9 – 2. (21 PA, .350, .381, .850; 6.7 ip, 1 er, 1.35 ERA).
Everything the W’s did Thursday, the ‘Roos did better. They hit better, they pitched better. Their middle infielders (ss Beckham, 2b Lopez) put up identical lines: 2 for 4 with a homer, 1.750 OPS. Michael Pineda went 5.7 good innings with 1 earned run. The W’s gained 0.4 games on the Rosebuds, about 5% of the gap. The ‘Roos gained 0.6 games, or a bit over 5%, which means they’re on pace to catch the Rosebuds a little before the Wolverines do. This will be sometime in July; no need to hold one’s breath. Oh, and I suppose it is possible the Rosebuds won’t heed my pleas to keep up their Wednesday style-of-play.
Pittsburgh: W, 6 – 4. (27 PA, .208, .296, .500; no pitching)
Speaking of identical lines: Michael Chavis and JD Martineze put up identical 1 for 4 with a homer lines, too, to co-lead the Alleghenys’ OPS with Pete Alonso (2 for 4 with a double, which is also 1.250 OPS).
Kaline: DNP, 2 – 5. (32 PA, .143, .250, .250; 6 ip, 1 er, 1.50 ERA).
Haviland: DNP, 3 – 5. (25 PA, .348, .360, .565; 0 ip, 4 er, even BIGGER Infinite ERA!).
Like son, like father… except even bigger on the infinite ERA! (Although it is risky to talk about different sizes of infinity in the presence of a mathematician.) One of the deepest satisfactions of family life is to watch proudly as all your work training up your parent pays off in achievement beyond one’s own. Right, Mark?
Cottage: DNP, 8 – 2. (30 PA, .400, .500, .680; 5 ip, 3 er, 5.40 ERA).
Shohei Ohtani hit for the cycle Thursday. That’s a 1.000, 1.000, 2.500 line for 3.500 OPS. He was the first Japanese player to achieve the cycle. I am proud of my former Wolverine, and also appreciative of the satisfying aesthetics of .400, .500, .680.
Bellingham: L, 6 – 7. (25 PA, .333, .360, .667; 1 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA).
Brookland: DNP, 5 – 0. (43 PA, .341, .349, .805; no pitching.)
Manny Machado hit two homers. So did Cody Bellinger. The Outs used their offday to beef up their offensive numbers considerably.
DC: L, 2 – 8. (33 PA, .226, .226, .226; 7 ip, 6 er, 7.71 ERA.) Yikes! A very picturesque but also sub-replacement batting line matched with an above replacement ERA.
