I must warn you: today’s standings are not pristine! I did this update with this morning’s standings and yesterday morning’s BP stats. That’s not ideal, but I don’t have time right now to fix it. There is a birthday in the family today and I’m probably going to miss my noon deadline by a few minutes.
At least it’s better than what I did yesterday, which was grab the standings in the middle of the afternoon, which means some of yesterday’s MLB games were already done and reflected in the standings while others were not.
I suppose it doesn’t hurt much given we are near the end of the month anyway, and I’ll be careful to do it right on the morning of August 1. The effects are subtle. Far subtler than the effects MLB teams are having on us by not sealing their trade deadline deals yet, even though their deadline is tomorrow. Our deadline for this month is w after the upcoming managers meeting when roster allocations are due.

( The following results are from Sunday’s stats.)
.
Portland: 66 PA, .315, .424, .500; 5.3 ip, 6 er, 10.12 ERA).
I think Sunday was the day Jamie prayed for the Rosebuds to have a bad day. And their pitcher (Chris Sale) did just that! But their hitters just barely pulled off an Edgar Martinez Day. Not the collapse the Tornados wanted.
Flint Hill: (45 PA, .295, .489, .658; 2.3 ip,, 2 er, 7.71 ERA)
Another great hitters’ day! It doesn’t quite qualify as an Edgar Martinez Day (batting average was too low by 0.005). And another sad pitching day. Nevertheless, the Tornados edged closer to the top.
Old Detroit: (53 PA, .213, .302, .511; 21.7 ip, 10 er, 4.15 ERA)
The Wolverine outfield doesn’t get a lot of press. The public has generally perceived it as a refuge for marginal, somewhat disappointing major leaguers. But maybe that changed Sunday! Brian Reynolds, Kyle Schwarber and Jorge Soler combined to go 6 for 13 with a double, 2 walks, a hbp… and all four Wolverine homers! That would be a .462, .562, 1.231 line, for a nice 1.793 OPS. The rest of the Wolverines batted .117, .189, .147.
Pittsburgh: (44 PA, .256, .341, .462; 8 ip, 1 er, 1.12 ERA)
The Alleghenys surged back in front of the Dragons with good hitting and outstanding pitching led by Stephen Strasburg’s 7 ip, 1 er, two-hit, 9 k, 0 walk outing. The A’s featured speedy outfielders Sunday, with Byron Buxton, Brian Goodwin, and Ender Inciarte combining to go 6 for 12 with two doubles and an Inciarte home run.
Haviland: (47 PA, .233, .298, .395; 6 ip, 6 er, 9.00 ERA)
Foreshadowing Canberra’s comments, Domingo German and Sean Newcomb had starkly different outcomes Sunday. Domingo German allowed three earned runs in 5.3 innings – a decidedly mediocre outing with a 5.06 ERA. Sean Newcomb also allowed three earned runs, in a much more efficient 0.7 ip, for a 40.50 ERA.
Canberra: (31 PA, .207, .258, .414; no pitching (? – at least that’s what BP is saying at this moment).
Kyle Barraclough and Kirby Yates — the first and last names on the Canberra pitching roster — have combined to pitch exactly 9 innings for the Kangaroos in July so far (through Sunday). They also share a first initial. But their stat lines are not quite identical:
KB: 0.3 ip, 1 er, 1 h, 1 hr, 0 k, 0 w, 27.00 ERA, 42.21 FIP (per Baseball Prospectus).
KY: 8.7 ip, 0 er, 6 h, 0 hr, 16 k, 0 w, 0.00 ERA, -0.14 FIP (also per BP).
Things to note:
- Kirby has managed to whittle their joint ERA down from 27 to 1.
- I wonder what the postgame conversation would be like between Kirby and Kyle.
- BP thinks the average KY July game would result in slightly below zero runs being scored… take that, those of you who doubt the EFL’s influence on the game!
- BP also thinks the average game in which half the batters make an out and the other half hit homers would result in a little over 42 runs. But wouldn’t it be more like 27 — even assuming it was the home team and they were down 26-24 going into the bottom of the ninth? Another reason to be uneasy about BP’s FIP stat.
Peshastin: (40 PA, .306, .375, .611; 5.7 ip, 3 er, 4.76 ERA).
Victor Robles and Marcus Semien combined to hit for the cycle, with an extra single and two walks, in 9 plate appearances: .714, .778, 1.571, or even better than the Wolverine outfielders.
Kaline: (49 PA, .233, .286, .488; 5 ip, 2 er, 3.60 ERA).
That other Santana — no, I mean the other other Santana. Danny Santana. Yes, the Ranger: he would have hit for the cycle had he tripled instead of walked. As it was he went .750, .800, 1.750 on the day.
Cottage: 32 PA, .207, .281, .414; 11 ip, 11 er, 9.00 ERA)
Danny Duffy pitched. The Cheese got toasted. But… this time it wasn’t really Duffy’s fault. Sure, he allowed 4 er in only 6 ip, not a great day. But Yonny Chirinos did the real damage: 4 ip, 7 er, for a 15.75 ERA on the day. Is this good news for Duffy fans? I don’t know. Neither one of them would answer the phone. It depends on whether Chirinos was going to stink that bad on his own, or whether he was collateral damage in the curse clinging to Duffy’s name.
Also — a little shoutout to JP Crawford who turned in an outstanding defensive play last week, diving to his right to grab a hot shot, then sort of flopping himself up like a salmon climbing a waterfall, while also twirling to make the throw, his feet never really under him. He looks like a keeper.
Bellingham: (21 PA, .222, .333, .389; 15 ip, 7 er, 4.20 ERA)
I know Wade Miley. I had Wade Miley on my team. This guy (5 ip, 0 er, 6 k’s) is no Wade Miley. Wade Miley on a good day would go 6 ip, 2 er like Mike Fiers did. On any other day he went 4 ip, 5 er like Dakota Hudson did. I have no idea who this is masquerading as Wade Miley.
Brookland: (39 PA, .343, .410, .600; 2.3 ip, 0 er, 0 ERA)
Help me out here, Brooks, I think I’ve lost track of your team. Is Brian Dozier really your star these days, going 2 for 3 with a double, a homer and a walk?
DC: (29 PA, .346, .414, .462; 14 ip, 12 er, 7.71 ERA)
They’re living large in DC again, colorful, extravagant, conspicuous. That offense makes a Wolverine fan envious. But the pitchers! Kevin Gausman (6 ip), relieved by Daniel Hudson (1 ip) and Marcus Walden (1 ip), all delivered ERA’s of exactly nine. Dylan Bundy almost kept pace (5 ip, 4 er). Jarlin Garcia couldn’t quite get into the same groove in his one inning — striking out 2 and surrendering no earned runs.
