One of the things I do often as I prepare to write these updates is to take a look at the monthly standings. It is interesting for me to see how different teams did each month, and to notice the undulations month to month for almost every team. This morning, my interest was piqued as I looked to see which team led in various categories at the end of each month. I thought I would share with you some of those findings this morning.
Most wins in a month: 21 (Old Detroit in August though he didn’t have the highest Win% that month – it belonged to Pittsburgh at .702)
Fewest losses in a month: 8 (there are 3 teams tied for this – Old Detroit in May, Flint Hill in July, and Pittsburgh in August)
Most runs scored in a month: 231.1 (Cottage in June, and second place is not even close – Portland with 210 in April)
Fewest runs allowed in a month: 99.3 (Pittsburgh in July – it is the only month so far that anyone has allowed less than 1o0 runs)
Lowest monthly team ERA: 3.30 (Kaline in April)
Highest monthly RC/G: 7.97 (Cottage in June)
Some other notes:
- Every team has had at least one month where they went .500 or better.
- A different team has finished first each month – no one has repeated this season.

Portland: W(2), L(0); 15-9 – The Rosebuds are the first to 100 wins! What a great accomplishment. They tied the Astros as the first team to make it that mark, and like the Astros they did it for a second year in a row. The past two days have been new players leading the way – Cavan Biggio (only partially activated) and Tommy Pham (12 total bases including 5 for 6 last night). Their pitching has been just ok, but it has been enough to gain back the ground lost to the Tornadoes earlier this month.
Flint Hill: W(1), L(1); 4-10 – The Tornadoes have hit a slump, and it is not good timing. Up until yesterday our winning percentage for the month was over .900, and it looked like we were making a race out of this thing. But the past two days have seen a slash of .227/.298/.387. We haven’t given up but we aren’t fighting too hard anymore. JD Martinez, Javy Baez, Mike Trout and Max Kepler are all injured. In case you’re wondering, that group has hit 110 HRs this season. And now? Nothing.
Old Detroit: W(1), L(1); 8-5 – The Wolverine pitching has been great lately, stringing together an ERA of 2.05 the past two days. Their best hitter is apparently also a giant crybaby.
Peshastin: W(2), L(0); 8-4 – The story for the Pears the past two days is pitching – 12 IP and 2 ER for an ERA of 2.19. That will win you some games!
Pittsburgh: W(2), L(0); 10-4 – Everyone is certain Pete Alonso will win the ROY for the NL, and unless he is picked first by DC, he will probably not be a part of the EFL for the next several year. But he is winning games for the Alleghanys this season! His OPS over the past two days is 2.095.
Haviland: W(2), L(0); 9-8 – Over the past two days the Dragons pitchers have hurled 23 IP! That is a lot of work over two days. And Hilliard, Nimmo and Puig have provided the offensive fireworks tallying 15 hits in 24 ABs. Impressive!
Canberra: W(0), L(2); 6-7 – The Roos have had a difficult two days. Not much hitting and mediocre pitching. It will be interesting to see if Bregman is chosen as AL MVP since Trout lost the last month of the season.
Kaline: W(2), L(0); 10-(-1) – In 2 days the Drive wracked up 101 plate appearances – that is incredible! And their pitchers have thrown 33 IP – over two days! And those 33 IP were very good, to the tune of sub 3 ERA. Talk about saving it all up for a grand finale. Look out, Roos.
Cottage: W(1), L(1); 11-4 – It looks to me like the Cheese should have won both games, so perhaps there were some replacement innings or rounding errors that played into this outcome. Yoan Moncada is catching fire, but perhaps just a tad too late.
Bellingham: W(1), L(1); 10-4 – The Cascades threw 13 IP over the past 2 days and gave up precisely one run for an ERA or .66. That is amazing. And Bryce Harper is hitting like he wants to make the playoffs.
Brookland: W(0), L(2); 7-16 – I saw a stat the other day about Bellinger who in the second half has really cooled off from the torrid pace he was on in the first half. It made me realize how little I have heard his name (which should have been a sign of how he was doing). But the past two days he has been heating up with a HR and 2 doubles in 9 PAs.
DC: W(1), L(1); 3-6 – The other night the Red Sox battled the Giants in extra innings. I listened to Benintendi’s 7th AB of the game, and the announcers were talking about how unlucky he had been on the night, hitting it hard every time, but just right at someone. Well, the night before he went 0-4, so I don’t know how long an unlucky streak lasts, but 0-11 is pretty brutal! But the Balk pitchers threw 10 IP without giving up a single run, so take that, Benny Biceps!
